Government launches independent panel to review housebuilding red tape

The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has launched an independent housing standards review.

The review will be conducted by:

  • The newly formed Challenge Panel, which is a panel of industry representatives established to review the Building Regulations 2010 (and associated Approved Documents).
  • The housing standards review group, which will be established by the DCLG, will look at local authority housing standards, including the Code for Sustainable Homes.

The review's aim is to rationalise the current complex system of regulations, standards, rules and guidance that applies to house-building, to make it easier for developers and house builders to understand the applicable housing standards and, ultimately, to build more new homes.

The review and panel will submit their findings to the government by April 2013.
